Typhoon-related Leptospirosis and Melioidosis, Taiwan, 2009

چکیده
that the actual prevalence of plague seems to be underestimated. The low population density in Mongolia explains the low amount of illness in humans. Further investigations should include the screening of rodent populations near the plaguepositive loci. In addition, fl eas and other parasites (and also predators of small mammals) should be studied. Mongolia is a key area of plague genesis and therefore is an ideal location for more detailed study of the role of rodents as epizootic and enzootic reservoirs of Y. pestis.

متن کاملMelioidosis Outbreak after Typhoon, Southern Taiwan
From July through September 2005, shortly after a typhoon, 40 cases of Burkholderia pseudomallei infection (melioidosis) were identified in southern Taiwan. Two genotypes that had been present in 2000 were identified by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Such a case cluster confirms that melioidosis is endemic to Taiwan.
متن کاملFulminant Leptospirosis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease, is usually transmitted from rats to humans through contacting with the contaminated urine. In Taiwan, it especially occurs sporadically after a flood or typhoon. We present a case of flu-like illness contracted by working at a poorly hygienic place where the patient experienced progressive pulmonary-renal syndrome two days after admission. Timely institution o...
متن کاملThe Concentrations of Ambient Burkholderia Pseudomallei during Typhoon Season in Endemic Area of Melioidosis in Taiwan
BACKGROUND Melioidosis is a severe bacterial infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei with a high case-fatality rate. Epidemiological and animal studies show the possibility of inhalation transmission. However, no B. pseudomallei concentrations in ambient air have been researched. Here, we developed a method to quantify ambient B. pseudomallei and then measured concentrations of ambient B....
متن کاملSuccessful treatment of life-threatening melioidosis with activated protein C and meropenem.
Melioidosis is an endemic disease in southeast Asia and northern Australia, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. A typhoon-related outbreak occurred in southern Taiwan in July 2005. High mortality in melioidosis associated with bacteremic pneumonia and septic shock. We report a patient with life-threatening melioidosis who developed rapid progression of bacteremic pneumonia with acute respirato...
